Graduate Student Caucus

The NEMLA Graduate Student Caucus welcomes participation by all NEMLA members who are pursuing a graduate degree. The Caucus offers graduate students an arena in which to socialize, share ideas, and learn about some of the professional demands of an academic career--such as publishing, delivering conference papers, writing grant proposals, and going on job interviews. With the generous support of NEMLA, our caucus is able to provide the following privileges for graduate students:

Graduate Student Assistantships

Limited assistance is available for graduate students presenting papers at the 2007 NEMLA convention:

A limited number of assistance packages will be available for graduate students whose institutions either do not have any assistance provided for graduate students to attend and present papers at conferences or who have exhausted that assistance for the year (the letter from the student's institution must affirm that this condition has been met). The assistance provided by NEMLA will include waiving the registration and membership fee for the convention, and will include one single night in the convention hotel (you must present a credit card at the hotel check in desk to cover any incidentals like phone calls).

The graduate student seeking assistance should send their abstract or completed paper for the proposed panel presentation, a current curriculum vitae, and have the chair of their NEMLA panel send a recommendation of their proposal, and a faculty member from their institution send in a recommendation with the statement about the unavailability of funding to the candidate to deliver a paper at NEMLA to the NEMLA Graduate Caucus Chair. Send this information to Darcie Rives, University of Nebraska-Lincoln;; Andrews 331 Lincoln, NE 68588-0333 The assistanceships will be offered to qualified candidates on a first come, first served basis. Each application can only be considered when complete -- when all of the required material has been received. The final deadline for receipt of all materials will be Nov. 30. Faxes of letters or e-mailed letters of recommendation cannot be accepted. These recommendations should not be mailed by the graduate student applying for funds but should be sent separately by the writers of the letters. No funds for travel assistance are available. Only stay in the convention hotel will be covered and there is no substitute for this provision.

Graduate Student Caucus Roundtables

To serve the professional concerns of graduate students, the Caucus organizes roundtables to focus on issues of particular interest, such as the academic job market and publishing

Graduate Student Business Meeting

All graduate students are invited to this meeting to discuss how NEMLA can serve the needs of graduate students. Officers will be nominated and elected. Information for the 2006 Convention meeting will be posted at a later date.

Graduate Student Caucus Socials

Subsidized by NEMLA, the Caucus will sponsor various socials, including breakfasts during the convention and the Graduate Student Forum. At this annual meeting and social hour, graduate students have a chance to share their experiences at NEMLA and their home institutions, as well as discuss how NEMLA can better serve them in the future.

Graduate Student Caucus Paper Prize

NEMLA awards an annual prize to the best graduate student paper presented at any of the conventions sections. The winning paper, as determined by a committee of peers, is published in the NEMLA journal Modern Language Studies. The winner of the 2005 Graduate Caucus Paper Prize is Michael Sayeau for his paper, " 'Love at a Distance (Bloomism)': The Chance Encounter and the Democratization of Modernist Style."

The submission deadline for the 2006 Graduate Student Caucus Paper Prize is December 15, 2005. The selected paper will be published in Modern Language Studies; therefore, only those papers which are not currently under review for publication will be eligible for the prize. Further, only papers presented at 2005 Convention in Boston will be considered. Graduate students are invited to send 20-25 page versions of those essays to Darcie Rives, preferably by email, at rivesdd@yahoo.com, or by "snail mail" to Darcie Rives, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 331 Andrews Hall, Lincoln, NE 68588-0333. Please address questions to rivesdd@yahoo.com.

Summer Fellowship

A number of $1,000 fellowships are available to graduate students and other NEMLA members for summer study. Priority is given to scholars who need travel assistance in order to complete their research. The deadline for submissions is January 15. Click here for more information.
